Barretto Point Park is the Bronx's best waterfront surprise - a green peninsula on the East River in the middle of the Hunts Point industrial district, with an amphitheatre, a beach and, in summer, the Floating Pool Lady moored alongside. A full day of gospel in that amphitheatre, free and outdoors with the river behind the stage, is one of the more unexpected things on a Bronx summer calendar. Bring a chair and stay a while.
What to expect
Expect performances running through the day at the amphitheatre, an audience on the terraced seating and surrounding grass, and the East River and Rikers Island in the sightline behind. The park has a shoreline path, a playground and a small beach area. Come and go freely; nothing is ticketed or seated in advance.
