Snug Harbor exists because a wealthy New Yorker left his fortune in 1801 to build a home for aged sailors, and the resulting institution ran on Staten Island for well over a century with its own farm, hospital, chapel and cemetery. The historical tour tells that story where it happened, covering the men who lived here and the completeness of the community around them.
