Washington Square's southwest corner has been a public chess arena for half a century; the northwest plaza doing the same for Scrabble is the natural extension, and it is far more welcoming to a casual player than the chess tables ever were. Boards are set out, strangers pair off, and the arch is right there. It is the best free way to spend a Sunday morning in the Village that does not involve waiting for brunch.
