Summerfest

Harlem's Summerfest takes over the Richard Rodgers Amphitheater in Marcus Garvey Park — outdoor seating carved into the rock.

The Richard Rodgers Amphitheater is one of the great pieces of park infrastructure in Manhattan — banked outdoor seating tucked against the schist outcrop that gives Marcus Garvey Park its shape — and Summerfest is Harlem using it as intended. Programming stretches from the middle of the day into the night, so you can drop in for an hour or settle in for the whole arc. If you want a free Harlem afternoon with real neighborhood texture, this is the block to be on.

What to expect

You enter Marcus Garvey Park and drop down to the amphitheater bowl, where fixed seating faces a covered stage. Expect a mix of programming across the day, a crowd that comes and goes from the surrounding park paths, and vendors and community tables around the edges. The park's playgrounds and lawns are steps away if you are with kids who need to move.

Good to know

  • Marcus Garvey Park runs from 120th to 124th Street between Madison and Mount Morris Park West in Harlem.
  • The 2 and 3 at 125th Street and the 4, 5 and 6 at 125th Street are both a short walk.
  • The amphitheater has fixed seating, but bring a cushion if you plan to stay for hours.
  • The park is built on a steep rock outcrop — use the amphitheater-level entrances if stairs are an issue.
  • It is free and open to the public with no ticket needed.
  • Shade is limited in the bowl at midday, so bring water and a hat.
