Concrete Plant Park is exactly what it sounds like — a derelict cement plant on the Bronx River turned into parkland with the old structures left standing — and the Bronx River Alliance launches canoes from its boat ramp. This trip runs the lower saltwater stretch down to the river mouth and back, marsh grass on one side and city on the other, with shorebirds most of the way. If you want the Bronx River at its strangest and best, take the boat.
What to expect
You meet at the Concrete Plant Park boat launch for a safety orientation, then push off in provided canoes with paddles and life jackets. The group stays together for the run down to the river mouth and back while guides talk through the estuary. Tides, current and some boat traffic all factor in, so this trip asks for a little paddling competence.
