Picnic Performances is New York's most civilized free series — bring a blanket, buy a picnic from the park's kiosks, and hear City Opera singers do Bernstein, Gershwin and Sondheim under the Midtown towers. It's the series opener, so the lawn is fresh and the crowd is festive. Reserved lawn spots are free but go fast. The singers are City Opera's principal artists, not students, so the standard is high.
