Operators announce exact dates in early fall, and the pattern is consistent year to year: Bryant Park's Winter Village opens first, in late October, and its holiday shops run into the first days of January (the ice rink keeps going through the end of February). Union Square opens in mid-November and always closes at 4pm on Christmas Eve. Columbus Circle runs from late November through December. Bryant Park is the full afternoon: the most stalls, the rink, the tree, and the heated après-skate spots — go on a weekday if crowds aren't your thing. Union Square is the strongest for actual gift shopping, with the densest run of independent artisans and the easiest subway access in the city. Columbus Circle is the scenic quick stop — smaller, right at Central Park's corner, and pairs naturally with a park walk or Fifth Avenue windows.
Entry is free everywhere — budget for food and gifts, not admission. The single best time at any of them is a weekday before 5pm; weekend afternoons from Thanksgiving onward are shoulder-to-shoulder. Bryant Park's free-admission rink is the sleeper deal: bring your own skates and the ice costs nothing, and the rink outlives the shops by nearly two months.
