The Christmas Spectacular is the bookable one: it opens November 4, 2026, runs 230 performances through the season, and tickets are already on sale with a 14-ticket cap per purchaser for the whole season. The Rockefeller Center tree lighting is the opposite — the date is announced by Rockefeller Center in the autumn and has not been published for 2026. It has fallen in the first week of December in recent years, and the ceremony itself is a ticketless street event that is extremely crowded. Once the tree is lit it stays lit daily from 5am to midnight, which is when it is actually worth visiting.
Lighting night is the worst possible time to see the tree: the plaza is closed off, the surrounding blocks are packed from mid-afternoon, and you will spend hours for a distant view. Any weekday morning in December gives you the same tree with a fraction of the people — 5am to about 9am is genuinely quiet, and the light reads better against a dark sky anyway. The rink beneath the tree is paid and books ahead; standing on the plaza rail to watch it costs nothing.
The tree and the Rockettes are the anchors, but the season stretches wider: the holiday markets open from late October at Bryant Park and mid-November at Union Square, the department store windows along Fifth Avenue go up around Thanksgiving, and the city's churches and concert halls run seasonal programming through December. Most of it is free to look at and the paid pieces — the show, the rink, the observation decks — are the ones that need booking rather than the ones that need timing.
