Opening weekend is when the boardwalks come back to life — Coney Island's rides are running, the Rockaway concessions reopen, and the water is cold but swimmable for the brave. It's a free, subway-reachable start to summer. The crowds are a fraction of July's. Rockaway's surf beaches and Orchard Beach's crescent are both reachable by subway or ferry for the cost of a fare.
What to expect
Lifeguarded swimming 10am–6pm; boardwalk concessions, playgrounds and restrooms open. Water temperatures in late May are in the high 50s to low 60s.
