Barefoot Shakespeare does what its name promises: no shoes, no set, no microphones, just actors working a text in the open air with the audience on the ground around them. Summit Rock is the highest point in Central Park, a rock outcrop above the West Side that turns into a natural amphitheater when a company claims it. It is entirely free, unlike the Delacorte's lottery, and the intimacy of unamplified verse a few feet away is a different experience altogether.
What to expect
Actors performing in the round on bare rock and grass with the audience sitting where it can find space. Expect no amplification, so arrive early for a close spot, plenty of direct address and audience interaction, and a company that plays through the park's ambient noise rather than over it.
