Crown Square Pizza

Detroit-style pizza arrives in Rockaway Beach from the owner of the boardwalk's Seany Pizza. Thick, crisp-edged squares in a neighborhood that defaults to the plain slice.

Sean Aiken already runs Seany Pizza on the Rockaway boardwalk, where the Neapolitan pies go over well but the peninsula still defaults to a plain New York slice. Crown Square is his argument for Detroit style: thick, pan-baked, cheese-crisped at the edges, with a pepperoni pie finished in Gorgonzola and hot honey. It opened in August and, unusually for the Rockaways, stays open all year.

What to expect

Detroit-style pies are baked to order and take longer than a slice shop, so build in the wait or call ahead. It sits one block off the beach at Beach 99th Street, which makes it an easy end to a September beach day. Get the pepperoni with Gorgonzola and hot honey if you only order one.

Good to know

  • One block from the sand at Beach 99th Street - easy to fold into a Rockaway beach day.
  • Detroit-style pies are baked to order, so expect a longer wait than a slice counter.
  • Open year-round, unlike much of the Rockaway boardwalk food scene.

Common questions

What is Detroit-style pizza?

A thick, rectangular pan pizza baked so the cheese caramelizes against the edges of the pan, giving it a crisp, browned border.

How do I get to Rockaway Beach?

The A train to Broad Channel, then the Rockaway shuttle to Beach 98th or Beach 105th Street. The NYC Ferry Rockaway route also runs from Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Is it related to Seany Pizza?

Yes. Both are from Sean Aiken. Seany Pizza on the boardwalk makes Neapolitan-style pies; Crown Square is his Detroit-style shop.
