No museum in the five boroughs can give a Richard Serra the room this one does - Dia took a 300,000-square-foot Nabisco factory and let daylight through the sawtooth roof do the lighting. The work reads completely differently at 10am and at 4pm, which is the whole point of coming. And it is genuinely easy: Metro-North drops you a ten-minute walk from the door.
What to expect
Give it three hours inside at minimum - the galleries are enormous and people routinely underestimate how long the De Maria and Serra rooms take. Add Beacon's Main Street for lunch and it becomes a comfortable six-to-seven-hour day from Grand Central. Last admission is 4:30pm, so aim to be in before 2pm if you want to be unhurried.

Is it open on Labor Day?
Yes. Dia Beacon's week is Friday through Monday, so Monday Sept 7 is a normal open day, 10am-5pm. It is closed Tuesday through Thursday year-round.
Can I do Dia and the town of Beacon in one day?
Easily, and you should. Main Street is a walk from the station in the other direction with enough restaurants and shops to fill the gap before your train home.
