Late September is peak market season, when the first apples arrive alongside the last tomatoes, and the Domino Park Greenmarket puts that harvest next to one of Brooklyn's best waterfront parks. Farmers and producers sell fruit, vegetables, mushrooms, fresh flowers and plants beside the restored Domino Sugar refinery. If you live in north Brooklyn, pair a market haul with a walk along the East River.

What to expect

Farm stands line River Street between South 3rd and South 4th Streets, a short walk from the park's elevated walkway and lawns. Cafe Susanne pops up at the park kiosk during market hours too, so many shoppers grab a coffee and wander the promenade after buying produce.
