The Wiener Werkstatte is remembered through Hoffmann and Moser, but the textiles, ceramics and fashion that made it commercially viable were largely designed by women whose names were left off the catalogue. This show puts them on the walls of a Fifth Avenue mansion, and the Jewish Museum is free every Saturday, which makes a Labor Day weekend visit genuinely cheap. If you like Vienna 1900 and resent how it is usually told, book the Saturday.
What to expect
Textiles, ceramics, jewellery, fashion and graphic work displayed at close range in the museum's Warburg mansion galleries, with biographical material on the designers. The building's domestic scale suits the objects better than a white cube would. Around an hour, or ninety minutes with the collection floors.
Good to know
- Take the 4, 5 or 6 to 86th Street, or the Q to 96th Street; the museum is at Fifth Avenue and 92nd
- Saturdays are free for everyone, which is the cheapest way to see this
- The museum is closed on some weekdays, so check the calendar before travelling
- Fifth Avenue and Central Park are directly outside if you want to make an afternoon of it
- Strong for design, textile and fashion people; the objects reward close looking
- Fully accessible; the mansion has lift access to the gallery floors
