A full symphony orchestra on the Great Lawn at sunset, 50,000 people on blankets, and fireworks at the end — it's one of the great free New York nights and has been since 1965. The Brooklyn and outer-borough concerts are smaller and easier. Arrive early, bring dinner, and stay for the fireworks. The outer-borough dates are the insider's choice: same orchestra, a tenth of the crowd.
What to expect
Free outdoor orchestral concerts (about 90 minutes) starting 8pm, preceded by youth-ensemble performances 6–7:30pm; Central Park and Prospect Park nights end with fireworks.
