The Face of Life is the rare Met show that reads as an argument rather than a survey: hang an Alice Neel nude beside a Picasso profile and a Leonora Carrington dreamscape and the question stops being who is this person and becomes what did the artist decide a person is. The galleries are dense but walkable in under an hour, which makes it the best single stop if your Met window is short. If you have been putting off a Fifth Avenue visit, this is the show worth the trip.

What to expect

Three connected galleries of paintings, works on paper, sculpture and photography drawn from the Met's holdings, arranged thematically rather than chronologically. Wall text is short and the sightlines are open, so it moves quickly even when the museum is busy.
