Sixty-plus years of unbroken Monday nights makes this one of the longest-running musical residencies anywhere in New York, and it happens in a room the size of a railroad apartment with a tin ceiling, red lights and Christmas decorations that never come down. Founded by pianist Bill Dunham in 1962 and now led by trombonist Peter Ballance, the band plays proper trad — 'Muskrat Ramble', 'Basin Street Blues' — while the bar carries on around it. What to expect

A cramped, dim barroom off Seventh Avenue South where the band sets up in the corner with no stage and no separation from the drinkers. Expect a rotating front line of clarinet, trumpet and trombone, plenty of regulars who have been coming for decades, and standing room once the seats go.

Good to know

  • The 1 to Christopher Street–Sheridan Square is a two-minute walk to Grove Street.
  • There is no cover, but a drink minimum applies and the bar is cash-friendly.
  • It is genuinely tiny — get there when the band starts if you want a seat rather than a lean.
  • Cash tips for the band are customary and go straight into the bucket that circulates.
  • The space is a single narrow room at street level with a step at the door.
  • Ideal if you want live music without committing to a ticketed set time.
