Washington Square is the park New Yorkers argue about most and volunteer in least, which is why the monthly clean-up is worth an afternoon: you spend it inside the arch-and-fountain postcard rather than walking past it. The work is litter, weeds, mulch and the planted borders that take a beating from a million visitors. It is the fastest way to meet the people who actually keep the place standing.
What to expect
Meet the crew at the park, sign in, and pick up gloves, grabbers and hand tools from the supply cart. The afternoon is spent moving between planted beds and lawn edges — clearing trash, pulling weeds, spreading mulch — in small groups with staff pointing out what stays and what goes. Expect steady light physical work outdoors and a lot of foot traffic watching you do it.
