West Indian American Day Carnival Parade

The 59th New York Carnival Parade takes over Eastern Parkway with mas bands, steel orchestras and soca trucks from 11am to 6pm. Free, enormous and the reason Labor Day belongs to Brooklyn.

Nothing else in New York runs at this scale. A million-plus people line Eastern Parkway while feathered mas sections, steel pan orchestras and soca sound trucks roll west along the parkway all afternoon, and it costs nothing at all to stand there and watch. Buju Banton and Kes lead the 59th edition of a parade that has anchored Brooklyn's Labor Day for more than half a century.

What to expect

Bands step off around 11am and keep coming until roughly 6pm, so the parkway stays thick with people, jerk smoke and speaker walls for most of the day rather than passing in one tidy procession. Expect costumed sections, whistles, flags from every island and vendors selling doubles, roti, sorrel and coconut water along the whole route. Pick a spot, plan to stand, and accept that you will not cross the parkway easily once it fills.

Good to know

  • Free to watch. There is no ticket, no gate and no assigned seating anywhere along Eastern Parkway.
  • Take the 2, 3, 4 or 5 to Franklin Ave or Grand Army Plaza; expect crowd control and some closed station exits.
  • J'Ouvert traditionally precedes the parade before dawn, but 2026 times and route were not published as of late August.
  • The Brooklyn Museum at 200 Eastern Parkway is closed Mondays, and its parking lot is closed Sept 1-8.
