Pope.L used peanut butter, flour, Pop-Tarts and Wite-Out as sculptural material and treated brand names as arguments about whiteness and Blackness, and the works on paper are where that thinking is at its rawest. The Drawing Center is free, which is unusual for a SoHo institution and makes this the easiest serious art stop in lower Manhattan. If you are already downtown this weekend, there is no reason not to walk into this one.
What to expect
Small and mid-scale works on paper hung to reward close reading, with caricatured faces set against word fragments and product names. Two other presentations, a student exhibition and the Black Art Library pop-up, share the building and the same closing date. Forty-five minutes is enough for the whole space.
