The sixth edition of the Studio Museum's storied 'F' series — the emerging-artist surveys that began with Freestyle in 2001 and have launched generations of careers — closes for good this Sunday. Seventeen early-career artists of African and Afro-Latinx descent fill the fourth floor of the museum's new 125th Street building with work on ancestry, grief, refuge, and the surreal. Closing day is a Studio Sunday, when admission is free for everyone.
What to expect
A single-floor group show of sculpture, painting, textiles, and installation by 17 artists, organized around the 'fade' as an in-between space of memory and resistance. Expect abstracted, materially dense work foregrounding ancestry, refuge, land as archive, grief, and the surreal. Leave time for the rest of the museum's new building while you're there.
