Inwood Hill Park holds the last old-growth forest left on Manhattan — actual glacial valleys, caves the Lenape used, and a salt marsh at the northern tip. Sleeping in it overnight, in a tent the Urban Park Rangers set up for you, for free, is the single most improbable thing on this calendar. The Rangers run night hikes and campfire programming through the evening. Families are chosen by lottery, so entering is the whole game.
What to expect
Rangers provide tents and run the evening program, which typically includes a guided night walk, fire-building or stargazing depending on conditions, and a morning breakdown. Families bring their own sleeping bags and food. The site is at the park's northern flats near Indian Road.
