Marbling is the rare craft that looks like magic to a five-year-old and still satisfies an adult: you drag a comb through floating pigment, lay cloth on the surface and lift out a pattern that can never be repeated. Industry City runs it as a drop-in family program with materials supplied, so there is no kit to buy and no skill barrier. If you need a Saturday activity in Brooklyn that produces an actual object rather than a sugar crash, take the kids to this one.

What to expect

Work tables set with marbling trays, pigments, combs and fabric squares, with instructors demonstrating the float-and-pull technique before turning people loose. Expect aprons, some mess, a short drying wait before you can carry your fabric away, and Industry City's courtyards and food halls open around the workshop.

It is built for families, with elementary-age children working alongside an adult; younger kids can take part with more help.

No. Trays, pigments, tools and fabric are provided at the workshop tables.

Do we keep what we make?

Yes. Each participant takes home the marbled fabric they pull, once it has dried.
