Bryant Park runs one of the city's densest slates of free summer programming, and most of it happens every day right in the heart of Midtown. On any given weekend you can play a public ping-pong or chess match, join a free yoga or fitness class, catch live piano, borrow a book from the open-air Reading Room, take a juggling lesson, or ride Le Carrousel. If you want a low-key, no-cost Midtown afternoon between other plans, the park's free activities are an easy, all-ages default.

What to expect

Across the lawn and terraces you'll find drop-in games, fitness sessions, live piano and cultural pop-ups running throughout the day, most free and requiring no reservation. Equipment for games is lent out on site; the vintage carousel charges a small per-ride fare. Grab a bistro chair, and build your own afternoon from whatever's on.

Good to know

  • Bryant Park sits behind the New York Public Library between 40th and 42nd Streets; the B/D/F/M to 42nd St–Bryant Park drops you right there.
  • Most activities are free and drop-in, with game equipment lent out on site.
  • Le Carrousel charges a small per-ride fare and is cash-or-card at the ride.
  • Movable bistro chairs and tables are free to use anywhere in the park.
  • Programming shifts by day and season, so check the park's schedule for what's on.
  • It's a great all-ages, wheelchair-accessible green space with restrooms on site.
