New York museums have spent four hundred years describing the Lenape in the past tense. This exhibition was built with the Lunaapeew community rather than about it, and it is organized around the present and the future first - contemporary artists, living language, current land stewardship - with removal as context rather than conclusion. More than thirty artists, plus listening stations that put the language in your ears.
What to expect
Paintings, prints, photography, tools, textiles and ceremonial garments by Lunaapeew artists across three thematic sections, with video and interactive stations introducing individual community members and the language itself. Plan an hour or more. MCNY's other galleries, including its permanent New York history installations, are included in the same visit.
