Araki has spent thirty years making films that look like a candy-colored fever and cut like a razor, and a new one is an event for anyone who came up on The Doom Generation or Mysterious Skin. The Roxy's small underground room, with a hotel cocktail bar directly upstairs, is the right register of louche for it. If you want a late Tribeca film night that is not a franchise, this is the pick.

What to expect

A compact basement cinema with deep seats, a small screen and a late-night crowd that skews downtown. The film carries adult content throughout, in Araki's usual saturated palette. The Roxy Hotel bar upstairs is open before and after for a drink, and the room is small enough that the audience reacts as a group.

Good to know

  • Roxy Cinema is at 2 Avenue of the Americas below the Roxy Hotel
  • Take the A/C/E to Canal Street or the 1 to Franklin Street
  • The film is explicitly adult — strictly a grown-up night out
  • The theater is small, so booking online is safer than walking up
  • The hotel bar upstairs runs late for a post-film drink
  • The cinema is below ground; contact the venue about accessible access
