Two of the weekend's guests are the rarer kind: not a director on a press tour but Geof Bartz, the editor who cut Pumping Iron, and Darius Khondji, talking about a film shot on seventeen cameras trained on one footballer. Tsou's Q&A lands while her debut is Taiwan's Oscar submission and still on 35mm. And Breien's Wives trilogy almost never screens as a single Sunday sitting.

What to expect

A small two-screen theater on Ludlow with a cafe and bookstore upstairs, and showtimes running from late morning to past midnight. Guest screenings sell out first, so buy ahead rather than walking up. Formats are listed per show: 35mm and 16mm prints for some titles, 4K and DCP for others.

Good to know

  • The theater is on Ludlow Street, a short walk from the F at East Broadway and the B and D at Grand Street
  • Q&A screenings tend to sell out well before the show, so buy in advance rather than at the door
  • Only some titles screen on film - the calendar lists the format next to every showtime, so check before you assume a print
  • There is a cafe and a bookstore on the upper floor if you are stacking two screenings in a row
  • The Wives films screen back to back, so the full trilogy is a long afternoon-into-evening commitment

Can I see the whole Wives trilogy in one day?

Yes. On Sunday, September 20 Metrograph runs Wives at 3:00pm, Wives: Ten Years After at 5:00pm and Wives III at 7:00pm. Note the Jane Gaines Q&A attached to Wives was on September 11, not this weekend.

Which films are actually on film prints?

The Left-Handed Girl and Knock Off are 35mm, Pumping Iron is 16mm, and The Warriors, Se7en, Stealing Beauty, Paprika, Evita, Time and Tide and The Little Mermaid screen on 35mm. Ghost in the Shell is a 4K remaster, and Zidane and the Wives films are DCP.
