Being taught modern dance by members of the Limón Dance Company, on grass, in the middle of Midtown, with a live musician playing rather than a speaker, is an absurdly good hour. The company has been a cornerstone of American modern dance since the 1940s, and the class is built for people who have never danced. If you want to start Saturday doing something new, say yes to this.

What to expect

Participants gather on the northeast corner of the Bryant Park lawn and follow Limón dancers through a warm-up and a sequence of movement, accompanied live rather than by recorded music. The hour is pitched at complete beginners, and children and older adults take part alongside trained dancers. You dance barefoot or in trainers on the grass.

Good to know

  • Bryant Park sits on the B, D, F and M at 42nd Street–Bryant Park and the 7 at Fifth Avenue.
  • No experience or equipment is needed; wear something you can move in.
  • Bring water, especially on a warm morning; the lawn has no shade.
  • All ages and abilities take part, so it is fine to come with children or older relatives.
  • It happens on the northeast corner of the lawn, so head to that end of the park.
  • It is an outdoor class, so it depends on weather conditions.
