Oishii at Chelsea Market

The vertical-farm strawberry brand Oishii opened its first-ever retail shop on Chelsea Market's Main Concourse in August, selling Connoisseur Grade berries, collaboration pastries and Japan-sourced goods.

See all this weekend's NYC picks

Oishii's berries have spent years as a grocery-aisle curiosity priced like jewellery, and this is the first place you can actually stand in front of them, smell the room, and decide for yourself. The Japanese fruit-gifting tradition the shop is built around explains the price better than any press release does - these are objects meant to be given, boxed, presented. Also: strawberry yuzu lemonade on tap, which requires no philosophy at all.

What to expect

A compact retail counter on Chelsea Market's Main Concourse rather than a sit-down space - gift boxes, individual berries, preserves, pastries and a drinks tap, with staff who will talk you through the grades. Expect premium pricing, weekend crowds moving through the market corridor, and a quick visit rather than a destination meal.

Good to know

  • Chelsea Market's Main Concourse runs between Ninth and Tenth Avenues at 15th Street - the A/C/E and L to 14th Street-Eighth Avenue is closest
  • The shop trades Thursday through Sunday only, so a Monday-to-Wednesday trip will find it shut
  • It is a retail counter, not a cafe - there is no seating attached to it
  • The berries are sold by grade; ask staff about the difference before you commit to a gift box
  • The High Line entrance at 16th Street is a block away and makes the natural pairing
  • Chelsea Market's corridor is at its worst on weekend afternoons; earlier in the day is far more pleasant
