This is the most reliably charming free thing in Midtown: an acoustic piano set up outdoors behind the library, played by working New York musicians who specialise in the pre-bebop repertoire almost nobody programs anymore — Joplin-era ragtime, Harlem stride, boogie-woogie. Office workers eat lunch at the green café tables, tourists stop mid-photo, and occasionally someone dances. No ticket, no line, and the easiest excuse to sit still in Midtown.
What to expect
An upright piano on the terrace with movable chairs and tables scattered around it; you can sit as close as you like or listen from the lawn. The pianist plays continuously with short breaks, and the park's food kiosks are a few steps away. No reservation, no line, no ticket.
