Have an account ready and a shortlist ranked before release day rather than browsing when it opens. Everything else, which is the large majority of the 300-plus, is walk-up: no booking, no cost beyond your time, just turn up during the site's stated window.
The mistake is treating the programme as a wish list rather than a geography problem. Pick one neighbourhood per half-day and cluster: Lower Manhattan, Downtown Brooklyn, Long Island City and the South Bronx each carry enough sites to fill a morning without a single long transit leg. Check each listing's hours individually — many open only for a few hours on one of the three days, and a site that is Saturday-only will not be there when you swing back on Sunday.
Open House New York Weekend is built on public access, and the walk-up sites are the core of it. Reservation-required sites and guided tours are handled through the ticket release rather than the door. The organizers publish the full site list and each entry's access rules on their own festival page, which is the only listing that reflects late additions and cancellations — worth re-checking the morning you go out.
