The concept sounds twee and then you sit down in it and it works: an hour of enforced quiet on a lawn with live music low underneath, and a few hundred people all doing the same thing without their phones. Pier 6's Liberty Lawn faces the harbor, which is arguably the best free view in Brooklyn. It is also the last of three Slow Summer dates for the season, and one of the softest ways to spend a September Sunday afternoon in the city.
What to expect
An hour of silent reading with live music, opened and closed by structured breakouts - one-on-one conversation and small group discussion about what everyone is reading. Expect a lawn crowded with blankets, a friendly solo-attendee-heavy crowd, and a facilitator running the timing rather than a free-for-all.
Good to know
- Pier 6 is at the Atlantic Avenue end of Brooklyn Bridge Park - take the 2/3/4/5/R to Borough Hall or the F to Jay Street and walk down
- Bring your own blanket or yoga mat; chairs are not permitted on the park lawns
- Bring whatever you are actually reading - there is no assigned book and no reading aloud
- The Liberty Lawn is fully exposed, so sun protection and water matter more than you would expect
- RSVPs are requested even though it is free, and they help the organizers size the setup
- Coming alone is the norm here rather than the exception
