It is the one afternoon a year the downtown restaurant scene sets up outdoors all at once - Seaport and Financial District kitchens, local chefs and small food businesses lined along the piers with the East River and the Brooklyn Bridge behind them. Because it is a school fundraiser rather than a promoter's festival, the money stays in the neighborhood and the room skews local rather than touristy. The KidZone makes it workable with children.
What to expect
Rows of restaurant tents down Piers 16 and 17, each serving one signature bite you redeem with punches from a taste card bought in advance, plus drink pours. A KidZone runs family activities including a Seaport Museum fishing game about the Fulton Fish Market that hands out free museum passes. Expect a slow, crowded loop of the piers and to eat standing up.

Is it free to attend?
No. Tasting is ticketed: you buy a taste card in advance and redeem bites and drinks from it at the restaurant tents. The South Street Seaport Museum does offer free general admission on its Family Day the same day.

Taste of the Seaport is run by a 501(c)(3) that supports two neighborhood public schools, Spruce Street School (PS 397) and Peck Slip School (PS 343), funding arts, library and enrichment programs.
