A 2020 wildfire destroyed Toney W. Merritt's studio and archive; Canyon Cinema and the National Film Preservation Foundation saved ten of his early films, and that rescue is why this weekend exists. Three programs cover the psychodramas, the miniatures and the recent digital work, and Merritt is in the room for all of them, with a different guest moderating each night.
What to expect
Three thematic programs of roughly 40 to 60 minutes each, drawn from 16mm prints, new digital preservations and recent video. Merritt presents every screening, with Q&As moderated by Peggy Ahwesh, Lynne Sachs, Yasmina Price, Maya Cade and David Sherman across the weekend.
