Bodyroll work — foam-roller and self-myofascial release, essentially — is the kind of thing people pay a studio for and then never do on their own, which is what makes a free public version genuinely useful. Garibaldi Plaza's shade and paving make a decent floor for it, and the park at that hour is dog walkers, NYU groundskeepers and not much else. If your back has opinions about your desk, this is a low-commitment, no-cost place to do something about it.
What to expect
Meet the instructor on Garibaldi Plaza, the shaded southeast corner near the chess tables, and settle onto a mat or towel on the paving. The session works through rolling and mobility sequences for the back, hips and legs at a pace anyone can follow, with the instructor demonstrating each position. Bring your own mat and roller if you have them; the paving is unforgiving without padding.
Good to know
- A, B, C, D, E, F or M to West 4th St-Washington Sq
- Bring a mat or thick towel — the plaza is paved stone, not grass
- A foam roller or ball helps, though instructors often adapt for people without one
- Free and drop-in for adults; no membership or booking
- Shaded by mature plane trees, so it stays comfortable as the morning heats up
- Cancelled in heavy rain, since there's no covered fallback

Common questions
Do I need my own foam roller?
It helps, but instructors typically offer alternatives using body weight and the ground for people who arrive empty-handed.
Is this a hard workout?
No. It's mobility and release work rather than cardio or strength, and it's scalable to whatever your body allows.
Is it free?
Yes — it's public park programming, free and drop-in, with no registration.
