The northeast corner is where Washington Square is calmest in the morning: the arch is right there for the photo, the busker economy hasn't started up yet, and there's real shade. Free drop-in programming here means a caregiver can land with a toddler and have the morning already half-planned. If you're within walking distance in the Village, the East Village or the West Village, it's about the easiest structured morning out you can get for nothing.
What to expect
Find the staff table in the park's northeast section near the arch and join in — activities rotate through simple crafts, songs, games and movement pitched at little kids. Children come and go as attention allows, and the surrounding lawns and paths give restless ones somewhere to burn energy. Caregivers stay throughout.
