Museums are staffed by working artists, and once a year the Whitney gives them the wall instead: visitor services, registrars, curatorial assistants and installers showing what they make on their own time. The 2026 edition lands at Westbeth, the former Bell Labs complex that has housed artists in the West Village since 1970, so the setting is half the draw. Free, and a far friendlier room than the institution the work comes from.
What to expect
A large, generously hung group show with real range — a polished photographic series next to a first painting in years — spread across Westbeth's ground-floor galleries. Wall labels list each artist's museum role alongside the work, which is half the pleasure of reading the show.
