This is the first survey of Brice Marden's paintings in New York in twenty years, and it reaches museum scale with loans from the Whitney and the Art Institute of Chicago. You can trace his path from a 1966 canvas inspired by a Midwest road trip to the brighter, beeswax-layered paintings he began making after time on the Greek island of Hydra. If you love quiet, luminous abstraction, it is the Chelsea show of the season.
What to expect
Large single-panel and multi-panel canvases in oil, beeswax and graphite, many with the soft, matte surfaces Marden built by mixing wax and turpentine into his paint. The installation emphasizes the plane of the canvas and his lifelong push to lock image and surface together.
