The Garment District's stretch of Broadway used to be four lanes of gridlock and is now a linear plaza with chairs, planters and a steady rotation of free programming — one of the most successful public-space conversions in the city, sitting directly on top of the Fashion Walk of Fame plaques. Catching something there costs nothing and requires no planning. If your midtown day has a gap in it, this is the best place to spend it outdoors.
What to expect
Look for the setup on the Broadway plazas in the Garment District, between the planters and the seating clusters. The program runs in open public space, so you can watch from a table, stand at the edge or wander through. Movable chairs are first-come and go fast around lunchtime, so arriving early gets you a seat.
