Linden Terrace is the highest natural point in Manhattan, a stone terrace ringed by linden trees with the Hudson, the George Washington Bridge and the Palisades laid out below it. Doing tai chi there at sunrise is the single best free thing available in the city at six in the morning, and almost nobody knows it happens. Slow, quiet and completely beginner-accessible - you copy the person in front and that is the whole method.

What to expect

Expect a small group moving through slow forms on the paved terrace, an instructor leading from the front, and near-total quiet apart from birds and the river. The terrace is flat stone with benches around its edge and long views west. Wear soft shoes and layers; it is genuinely cold up there before the sun clears the ridge.

Good to know

  • Fort Tryon Park is reached by the A to 190th Street, which exits directly into the park near the terrace.
  • Free and drop-in — no experience or equipment needed.
  • Dress in layers; the terrace is exposed and cold at dawn even in August.
  • Wear flat, soft-soled shoes for the stone surface.
  • The terrace is paved and level, reachable without stairs from the 190th Street exit.
  • Best for anyone who wants a quiet start rather than a workout.
