Very few free things in Central Park are also this participatory. The plaza above Turtle Pond gets a sound system, a DJ spinning swing and jump blues, and a floor's worth of dancers who range from people who compete to people who wandered over from Belvedere Castle. Free lessons during the breaks mean you can arrive knowing nothing and leave having danced. Bring shoes with a smooth sole and you are in.
What to expect
An open-air social dance on stone paving, DJ-led for the remaining dates of the season, with short taught lessons slotted into the breaks so newcomers can join in. Dancers of every level show up, and spectators ring the edge of the plaza. There is no floor to reserve and no partner required - people rotate through the afternoon.
