It is the one morning a year New York belongs to steel pan and daybreak, and it is free to stand in. Going means committing to a genuinely pre-dawn start, which is exactly why the crowd is people who care rather than people passing through. Pair it with the Eastern Parkway parade that follows and Labor Day becomes the biggest day on the city's calendar.

What to expect

Steel-pan bands and mas groups from roughly 6 AM through late morning around Grand Army Plaza and Crown Heights; paint, powder and oil are part of it, so wear clothes you are willing to ruin. Heavy NYPD presence, bag checks and street closures.

Good to know

  • Starts pre-dawn, around 6 AM — the 2026 hours were not posted by WIADCA at time of writing (2025 ran 6-11 AM)

  • Bag checks and street closures; the Eastern Parkway parade follows later the same day
