This is a one-off convening, not a touring band - three players who have each spent a career being the most interesting person in someone else's rhythm section, in a room that seats a few hundred. Dave's elastic, behind-the-beat drumming and Ndegeocello's bass are a rhythm section people build entire records around; Gales is the wild card, a blues guitarist dropped into a groove context. Three nights, two sets each, and then it dissolves.

What to expect

Two sets a night in a low-ceilinged basement club where the front tables are close enough to hear the drum kit acoustically. Expect an instrumental, improvisation-heavy show rather than a song-by-song set list, a full dinner and bar menu at the tables, and a hard turnover between the early and late shows.

Good to know

  • The Blue Note is on West 3rd Street off Sixth Avenue - take the A/C/E/B/D/F/M to West 4th Street
  • All seating is first come, first served within your ticket type, so arriving at doors materially improves where you sit
  • Bar-area tickets are 21+ and turn into standing room once capacity is reached; table seating is all ages
  • There is a per-person food and drink minimum on top of the ticket price
  • The late set is usually looser and less crowded than the early one if you have the stamina
  • Groups larger than eight need to book an advance group package rather than individual seats
