Seward Park is one of the oldest municipal playgrounds in the country, and on a late-August night it turns into a free open-air cinema for the whole Lower East Side. Smurfs sends Smurfette and company into the real world to rescue Papa Smurf — undemanding, bright, and exactly right for a park screening with kids on blankets. Arrive before dark, claim grass, and let the neighborhood fill in around you.

What to expect

The screen goes up near the East Broadway and Essex Street entrance with open lawn seating in front. Families arrive early to stake out space and the crowd keeps growing until the film begins. There is no concession on site, so bring snacks.

Good to know

  • Free with no ticket needed
  • F train to East Broadway is right at the park entrance
  • Bring a blanket — there is no provided seating
  • Glass bottles and alcoholic beverages are not permitted
  • Screenings begin at dusk and are canceled for heavy rain
