Winnie-the-Pooh's original stuffed animals, a Gutenberg Bible and Jefferson's handwriting, free inside the Fifth Avenue library.

The New York Public Library keeps its most famous objects in one free gallery off the main hall, and the roster runs from a Gutenberg Bible to the original Winnie-the-Pooh toys. Because the display rotates, regulars come back to see what has been swapped in. If you are in Midtown with an hour and no budget, this is the highest-value room in the neighbourhood.

What to expect

Enter the Schwarzman Building from Fifth Avenue and follow signs to the Polonsky gallery on the ground floor. Cases are arranged thematically with strong lighting and short labels, so it moves quickly. Declaring America is in the same building and also free.

Good to know

  • Take the 7, B/D/F/M or S to Bryant Park-Fifth Avenue
  • Entirely free with no ticket or reservation
  • The gallery rotates objects, so returning visitors see different things
  • Combine it with Declaring America upstairs and the Rose Main Reading Room
  • Step-free entry is on the 42nd Street side of the building
  • Great for families; the children's literature cases are the crowd favourite

Common questions

Is it really free?

Yes. The Polonsky Exhibition is free and open to the public with no ticket or reservation needed.

Are the original Winnie-the-Pooh toys there?

The library's Pooh toys are among the best-known objects in the Polonsky gallery, though displays do rotate.

How long does it take?

Around 30 to 45 minutes, or longer if you read every case.
