Summer on the Hudson is Riverside Park's free summer programme, and Harlem Moves is its uptown dance strand: movement sessions staged outdoors at the West Harlem Piers, with the Hudson, the George Washington Bridge upriver and the Palisades opposite. Everything in the series is free and drop-in, which means you can decide at six that you are going. If you want to move rather than watch, this is the waterfront version.
What to expect
Expect an outdoor session on the pier plaza with amplified music and an instructor leading from the front, open to whoever turns up rather than a registered class. The West Harlem Piers park has benches, sculpture and a fishing pier along the water, so there is room to watch as well as join. Wear something you can move in and bring water.
Good to know
- The West Harlem Piers sit at the foot of 125th Street on Marginal Street; the 1 to 125th Street is a walk west under the viaduct.
- Free and drop-in — no registration or ticket required.
- Wear movement clothes and shoes you can pivot in on a paved deck.
- Bring water; the pier plaza has minimal shade.
- The plaza is flat and fully paved, so it is wheelchair and stroller accessible.
- Good for all levels — Summer on the Hudson sessions are pitched at drop-ins.
