This is the whole state under one fence - butter sculpture, prize Holsteins, a full midway, free concerts and fried everything - for $8.32, with kids and seniors free every day. There is genuinely no five-borough version of it. Just be clear-eyed: Syracuse is six hours from Penn Station by train, so this is a weekend you book a hotel for, not a day you squeeze in.

What to expect

Be honest with yourself about the distance: this is not a day trip from New York. Amtrak's Maple Leaf 63 leaves Penn at 7:15am and reaches the fairgrounds platform at 1:11pm, and the NYC-bound trains call at the fair at 9:29am and 2:29pm - a same-day return would give you about 78 minutes on the grounds. Go up Friday or Saturday, sleep in Syracuse, and give the fair a full day: gates 9am-11pm, midway 11am-11pm.

Good to know

  • Car-free: Amtrak runs a seasonal platform on the fairgrounds (station code NYF) for the length of the fair. Maple Leaf 63 departs Penn 7:15am, arrives 1:11pm; E
  • This is an OVERNIGHT, not a day trip. The NYC-bound trains call at the fair platform at 9:29am and 2:29pm, so a same-day round trip leaves barely an hour inside
  • Labor Day Monday Sept 7 is the last day and closes early: 9am-9pm, no entry after 8pm. The parade is 10:30am and fireworks close it out.
  • Kids 12 and under and seniors 65+ are free every day of the fair.

Common questions

How do I get there without a car?

Amtrak, all the way to the gate. During the fair only, Empire Service and Maple Leaf trains stop at a seasonal State Fair platform (NYF) on the grounds. Maple Leaf 63 leaves Penn Station 7:15am and arrives 1:11pm.

Can I do this in one day from NYC?

Not sensibly. The fastest train is about six hours each way and the NYC-bound trains call at the fair at 9:29am and 2:29pm, so a same-day round trip gives you barely over an hour inside. Treat it as an overnight.

How much is it?

$8.32 for an adult including fees, free for anyone 12 and under or 65 and over, every day. It bills itself as the most affordable state fair in the country.
