The opening five minutes remain the best argument for live theatre in New York: a sunrise, Rafiki's call, and a savannah of giraffes, antelope and elephants walking up the aisles. Julie Taymor's design won her a Tony for direction and another for costumes, and nothing has replaced it in nearly three decades. If you are travelling with kids or grandparents and want one show everyone will actually enjoy, this is still the answer.
What to expect
Two and a half hours of visible-puppeteer stagecraft, with performers wearing masks that float above their own faces and grassland created by dancers with headdresses. Expect Lebo M's choral arrangements, the Elton John and Tim Rice songs from the film, and additional numbers written for the stage.
