Christopher Gattelli restages the off-Broadway evergreen with Matt and Lewis as the lovers and two scheming mothers pulling the strings.

This ran off-Broadway for forty-two years and never once played a Broadway theatre, which makes the transfer an event in itself. Jones rewrote his own show in his nineties to put a gay couple at its centre, so the sweetness people remember now carries a different weight. If you have sung along to Try to Remember without ever seeing the show that produced it, this is the production to fix that with.

What to expect

The Hayes is the smallest house on Broadway, which suits a musical originally built for a tiny room and a handful of props. No Broadway running time has been posted; the piece traditionally plays around two hours with an intermission. Expect deliberately simple staging that leans on suggestion rather than scenery.

Good to know

  • The Hayes is at 240 West 44th Street, a two-minute walk from Times Sq-42 St
  • Second Stage offers a discounted rush ticket and an under-30 price at the box office
  • It is the smallest Broadway house, so seats sell out fast and sightlines are close throughout
  • Gentle enough for older children, with a romance plot at its centre
  • Broadway houses generally go dark Mondays; check the weekly pattern before booking
  • Second Stage subscribers get first access, so single seats can be thin on popular nights

Common questions

How is this version different?

Tom Jones revised his own book and lyrics so the lovers are two young men, Matt and Lewis, and the scheming parents are mothers rather than fathers.

Has it played Broadway before?

No. The Fantasticks ran off-Broadway for decades; this Second Stage production is its Broadway premiere.
