Richard O'Brien's 1973 shocker has never had a cast list like this one: an Oscar nominee, a Golden Globe winner and an SNL alum crammed into the Frankenstein Place at Studio 54. Sam Pinkleton's revival earned nine 2026 Tony nominations including Best Revival of a Musical, and it plays to a room that has been throwing parties since the disco era. If you want the single loudest, least polite house on Broadway, this is it.

What to expect

A raucous, audience-forward staging in a house built for spectacle, with Rachel Dratch narrating and a cast that plays directly to the crowd. Expect call-and-response from regulars, glitter and fishnets in the seats around you, and a score that runs from Sweet Transvestite to Time Warp with almost no let-up between numbers.

Good to know

  • Studio 54 sits on West 54th Street; the B, D and E to Seventh Avenue or the 1 to 50th Street are closest.
  • The show contains strong sexual content and language and is not aimed at younger kids.
  • Regulars dress up and shout the classic callbacks, but props are not permitted inside the theatre.
  • Arrive with time to spare for the bar and bathroom lines, which are heaviest just before curtain.
  • Studio 54 is a Roundabout house with elevator access and assistive listening available at the box office.

Common questions

Is this the movie or the stage version?

It is the stage musical Richard O'Brien wrote first, in 1973. The Rocky Horror Picture Show film came two years later and added and cut material, so a few moments will surprise you even if you know the movie by heart.

Can I do the callbacks and shout at the stage?

Audience participation is part of the culture and the production leans into it, but Studio 54 does not allow rice, water pistols, newspapers or other props that midnight screenings permit.

How long does it run?

It plays roughly an hour and forty-five minutes with one intermission, which makes it an easy pairing with a late dinner in the Theater District.
